ROSEVILLE, Calif. – In spite of the recent cooler weather, mosquitoes are still out in full force, according to the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District. Mosquito traps all throughout the western part of the county still indicate large numbers of mosquitoes in the area – including the mosquito that transmits West Nile virus.

“Although we have seen a decrease in mosquitoes after our treatments, mosquito numbers are still high enough to be a cause for concern,” stated Joel Buettner, General Manager of the District. “We believe that continued surveillance and appropriate treatments will help reduce mosquito populations enough to decrease the risk of residents becoming infected with West Nile virus, which continues to be active in Placer County.” With forecasted higher temperatures and the upcoming long weekend, District officials are concerned that more people will be outdoors and potentially be exposed to infected mosquitoes. Because of high mosquito populations in certain parts of the county, the District has scheduled the following treatments for September 1 and 2 in the following areas:

September 1 and 2

  • Aerial spray over rice fields in western Placer County, North of Baseline Rd along Placer Sutter county line to the west. South of the Bear River and East to the western boarders of Sheridan, Lincoln and Roseville, between 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. (two consecutive nights are scheduled to reach the entire area)

September 2
Ground-based, truck-mounted spray between 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. in the following blocks:

  • Elverta area – area north of Baseline Road to Jackson Road, between Brewer Road and Locust Road, and the entire length of Country Acres Lane.
  • Lincoln – West from Joiner Parkway to Waverly Dr. /Teal Hollow between 1st Street and Nicolaus Rd. and East of Joiner Parkway to P street, between Shellback Dr. and 7th Street
  • Roseville – Amoruso Way north of West Sunset Blvd, including all side streets

Since several factors affect spraying activities, such as weather and wind conditions, the District encourages Placer residents to check the District website at www.placermosquito.org for any changes to the spraying schedule and accompanying maps of the planned treatment areas.

The Placer Mosquito and Vector Control advises the public to implement the 3 Ds of protection:

  • Drain any standing water that may produce mosquitoes.
  • Defend yourself and your home by using an effective insect repellent and dressing protectively when outside, and making sure screens on doors and windows are in good condition.
  • Contact the District for any additional help controlling mosquitoes around your home.
